Pinnacle were delighted to work on the Historic Peter Allen Building for the Science Museum in York City Centre.
The building has now been restored to its former glory, including incorporating the gorgeous Indian red paint on the windows and frames, just as it would have looked in 1870s.
The works comprised of re-roofing the existing Welsh slate roof. The original slates were entirely stripped from all roof slopes, with the team managing to salvage approximately 70%, which we then prioritised on the front-facing slopes. The balance of the remaining slates was sourced from one of our reputable reclaimed suppliers in the northwest.
New leadwork to the existing cast gutters and valleys with a lead DPC to create a new waterproof barrier to the structure. Coping stones were used to cap the walls to prevent further damage to the brickwork, allowing water to shed away.
Repair works were carried out to all the existing sash windows, including slice replacement and installing sash weights, ropes and ironmongery to enable all the windows to be fully functional.
Removal of a non-original fire escape and associated door at the first-floor level was undertaken and replaced by a bespoke-made traditional sash window and historic detailing undertaken to the masonry panel below.
